Journeys of Dr. G at Tyler Arboretum

The sabbatical project continues, exploring all that Tyler Arboretum has to offer

About this site

Hello!  My name is Dr. Laura Guertin, but my students just call me Dr. G.  I am an Associate Professor of Earth Science at Penn State Brandywine, located in walking distance (almost across the street!) from Tyler Arboretum.  I have known about Tyler Arboretum since I moved to Media and began teaching at Penn State in 2001, and I currently serve on the Tyler Board of Trustees.  I have visited Tyler many times, brought my students to Tyler for GPS mapping projects, and have supervised student independent study projects at Tyler.

Despite being connected with Tyler, I still feel there is so much more to see and learn about the arboretum!  The timing of events in my professional life make this the perfect opportunity for me to participate in all that Tyler has to offer.  On July 1, 2013, I begin a year-long sabbatical from Penn State.  My time off from teaching and service will allow me to focus on and advance my research.  To make sure I don’t stay attached to my laptop 24/7, I am challenging myself to get outdoors and explore Tyler.  I am looking forward to hiking the various trails, participating in volunteer opportunities, attending programs and special events, and much, much more!

I hope my journeys at Tyler Arboretum will also encourage others to get out and explore one of the oldest and largest arboreta in the northeastern United States.  I encourage you to comment on my posts and share your experiences as well.
